今や人々の生活に欠かせない存在のリネン。人類がリネンを使い始めて約１万年と言われていますが、長く愛され続けるにはちゃんとした理由があります。そこで今回はリネンの「知られざる魅力」と「特徴」をご紹介します。

麻（リネン）とは？（What is linen?）
「西洋の麻」とも言われる亜麻は比較的寒い地方で栽培される一年草の植物で、茎部分の繊維がリネンの原料となります。
（Flax, also known as “Western hemp,” is an annual plant grown in relatively cold regions, and its stem fibers are used to make linen.）
主要産地はフランス北部・ベルギー・東欧諸国・中国ですが、その中でも「アイリッシュリネン」「フレンチリネン」といったヨーロッパ発祥のリネンは品質が良く、世界中の人々から高い支持を得続けています。
（The major production areas are northern France, Belgium, Eastern European countries, and China. Among them, linens originating in Europe such as “Irish linen” and “French linen” are of high quality and continue to enjoy high support from people around the world.）
麻（リネン）の特徴（Characteristics of linen）
夏のイメージが強いリネンですが、単に涼しい素材というだけではなく、他にもいろいろな特徴を兼ね備えています。今回はその中でも特に大切な５つの特徴をご紹介します。
（Although linen has a strong summer image, it is not merely a cool material, but also combines many other characteristics. In this issue, we will introduce five of the most important characteristics.）
優れた吸湿性と撥水性（Excellent moisture absorption and water repellency）
リネンはコットンに比べ約４倍の吸湿性がある為、水分や汗を素早く吸い取り暑い夏でもサラっと気持ち良く着る事ができます。また吸い取った水分をすぐに発散してくれるので、カビや雑菌の繁殖を防ぎ、嫌なニオイも抑制してくれます。
（Linen is about four times more hygroscopic than cotton, so it can absorb moisture and perspiration quickly, making it comfortable to wear even in the hot summer months. It also dissipates moisture quickly, preventing the growth of mold and bacteria, and suppressing unpleasant odors.）
丈夫で長持ち（Durable and long-lasting）
リネンは天然繊維の中で最も強靭な素材と言われており、衣料品以外にも幅広く使用する事が出来ます。また水に濡れると強度が増すという特性を持っているので、生地に負荷が掛かりがちな洗濯も収縮さえ気を付ければ気兼ねなく行う事ができます。
（Linen is said to be the strongest of all natural fibers and can be used in a wide range of applications other than clothing. It also has the property that its strength increases when it gets wet, so laundering, which tends to put a heavy load on the fabric, can be done without hesitation as long as shrinkage is taken care of.）
汚れが落ちやすい
リネンは洗濯に強いだけではなく、汚れが落ちやすいのも特徴の一つです。衣料品以外にシーツ・タオルなどに使われているのも、洗いやすく清潔に保ちやすいという特性を活かしているからです。
（Linen is not only resistant to washing, but is also easy to clean. Linen is used for sheets and towels in addition to clothing because it is easy to wash and keep clean.）
また洗うごとに柔らかさが増し、より肌馴染みの良い風合いになっていくのも大きな魅力です。

リネンは繊維の内側に空気を含んでいる為、体温で温まった空気を体の周りに留まらせる天然のサーモスタットのような役割を果たしてくれます。

化学繊維のように一方的に熱を作ったり冷感性を強めるのではなく、その時に体が必要としている効果を自然的に作り出してくれるので、室内外でストレスなく使用する事ができます。

混紡性に優れている（Excellent blending properties）
リネンは異素材と混紡する事によって、お互いの良い点を共有しながら悪い点を補い合う事ができる素材です。代表的な混紡素材としては「リネン×コットン」があります。
（Linen is a material that can be blended with different materials to share each other’s good points and compensate for the bad points. A typical example of a blended material is “linen × cotton.）
麻はチクチクするというイメージの方が多くいますが、本来リネンは肌着や寝具に使われるほど滑らかな素材です。そこにコットンを混紡すると柔からさが増し、ふんわりとした肌馴染みの良い風合いになります。
（Many people have the image that linen is prickly, but originally linen is such a smooth material that it is used for underwear and bedding. When cotton is blended with linen, the softness increases and the texture becomes fluffy and comfortable on the skin.）
また、染まりにくく色落ちしやすいリネンのデメリットを染色堅牢度が高いコットンが補う事で洗濯による色の劣化を防ぎ、より扱いやすい生地になります。
（In addition, the high dye-fastness of cotton compensates for the disadvantages of linen, which is difficult to dye and prone to color fading, preventing color degradation due to washing and making the fabric easier to handle.）
他にも秋冬に重宝する「リネン×ウール」、ストレッチ性に富んだ「リネン×ポリエステル」などたくさんの種類があり、衣料品を中心に多くの支持を得ています。

麻（リネン）取り扱い上の注意（Precautions for handling linen）
リネンは他の繊維に比べ伸度が低い素材です。一度変形すると元に戻りにくくシワにもなりやすいので、引っ張るなどの強い力を与えないよう注意しましょう。
（Linen is a material with lower elongation than other fibers. Once deformed, it is difficult to return to its original shape and wrinkles easily, so be careful not to apply strong force such as pulling.）
またリネンは染色堅牢度が低い為、着用時の汗・摩擦での色落ち、洗濯時の色移りが起きる場合があります。
（Also, because linen has low dye fastness, color fading may occur due to perspiration or friction when worn, and color migration may occur during washing.）
特に濃淡色で染められたリネンはある程度色が安定するまでは、薄い色の衣類との着合わせや他の洗濯物との同時洗いは控えましょう。
（Especially for linens dyed in dark and light colors, do not wear them with light-colored clothes or wash them at the same time with other laundry until the color has stabilized to some extent.）

麻（リネン）のお手入れの仕方（How to take care of it）
非常に丈夫な素材のリネンですが、年月を重ねると共に生地への負担は蓄積されていきます。その中でも一番重要なのは洗濯方法です。少し気を付けるだけでも長持ち具合が大きく変わりますので、是非参考にしてみてください。
（Although linen is a very durable material, over the years the strain on the fabric accumulates. The most important factor is the washing method. A little care will make a big difference in how long it lasts, so please take a look.）
まずは洗剤です。強力な洗浄力があるものは生地を傷める原因になりますので、中性もしくは弱アルカリ性の洗剤を使用してください。また洗濯機を使用する際はネットに入れた方が安心です。
（First, detergent. Use a neutral or mildly alkaline detergent, as strong detergents can damage the fabric. It is also safer to put the garment in a net when using a washing machine.）
次に脱水です。通常の洗濯コースはしっかり脱水されるよう設定されている為、変形したりシワになる可能性があります。ソフト洗いコースなどで短めに脱水して、早めに自然乾燥するのがオススメです。
（Next is dehydration. The normal washing course is set to dehydrate the product thoroughly, which may result in deformation and wrinkling. It is recommended to use a soft washing course and dehydrate the garment shortly, and then dry it naturally as soon as possible.）
また乾燥機は縮みの原因となりますので、絶対に使用しないようにしましょう。
（Also, never use a dryer as it can cause shrinkage.）
まとめ
リネンは直接日光を当て続けると紫外線による色落ちや黄ばみが発生する場合があります。乾かす際は天気の良い日に生地を裏返した平置きの陰干しで、極力日光に当たらないように心がけてください。
（Continued direct exposure to sunlight may cause linen to fade or yellow due to ultraviolet rays. When drying, please try to avoid exposure to sunlight as much as possible by drying in the shade on a flat surface with the fabric turned inside out on a sunny day.）
